A rare Japanese iron Jizai Okimono of a snake, probably Meiji period, the realistically modelled, very long and fully articulated body constructed of multiple hammered plates simulating scales, the head with a hinged jaw opening to teeth and a forked tongue, the eyes in gilt, bearing a signature to the underside of the jaw. Length 135cm. Provenance: Sir Henry Steele DL (1879-1963), Lord Provost of Edinburgh and by descent, £1000-2000
